Economy and Education

The economy is a complicated entity and there are many factors involved in its operation. I am personally not a big fan of capitalism and an economic system where 70 percent of its success revolves around consumer spending. Nevertheless, at this point in time it appears to be the best that we can do. I intend to have an economic expert on my staff. I would also like to be in contact with Robert Reich (Berkley) and Tom Campbell (former U.S. Congressman) for advice on economic decisions. One viewpoint on the economy will not suffice. I would like to hear many ideas on this issue. A "grand vision" that I have is to propose a public works project nationwide that would address our massive infrastructure problems (internet, bridges, roads, electrical grid, pipes (both gas and water), train tracks, etc.).  I think if done right this would create a long term prosperity since so much work needs to be done in our nation on this issue.

Education is ideological in nature. Our government schools promote the ideology of secular humanism. Education is not ideologically neutral. I believe that parents should have the right to send their children to the school of their choice (provided that the educational system meets a consensus based set of standards). I support the idea of having a set of national standards for education. However, the means to reach those standards should be left to the localities as to how they are going to be met. I believe that education is a human right and that economics should not be a factor in whether someone is going to get educated or not. Free education would be an idea I support if we can find a way to finance it. Massive student debt from loans is unacceptable. We need reform on this issue and I would like to meet with students and educators to hear ideas on what we can do to fix this problem.
